Demographics
The Black community makes up the third largest population of color in California. Most Black Californians live in the Southern California region and are the group most likely to reside in urban, more populous areas of the state. Black Californians face the worst racial disparities on nearly half of all RACE COUNTS indicators. In 2024, Catalyst California collaborated with CBPN and L. Norwood & Associates to validate the results of Building Brighter Futures: Interests and Priorities of Black Californians, which polled nearly 1,300 voters on their opinions, priorities and voting motivations regarding reparations. This comprehensive survey aimed to capture the sentiments of Black voters in California on reparations and key social issues and to understand how these issues would influence their voting behavior.
